Responsible Gaming

This page sets out practical guidance for gambling with less risk, and it states plainly what this particular site can and cannot do to support that. It does not repeat anything from the shortlist page. Read it before following any link to an operator listed elsewhere on this site.

Where can a reader find independent help from this page?

Every page on this site, including this one, carries links to three independent gambling-help organisations: begambleaware.org, gamblingtherapy.org and gamcare.org.uk. These are the only outbound links on the site that are not commercial. Unlike the operator links, they carry no sponsored marking, they are set to nofollow, and they open in a separate tab on the organisation's own website. This site receives nothing when a reader follows one of them. Beyond being an independent source of help, this page does not describe what any of the three organisations does.

What can this site actually switch on for a reader who wants to stop?

Nothing. Controls such as deposit caps, loss caps, reality checks, cooling-off periods or self-exclusion belong to an account held with an operator. This site has no account, no form and no server-side application behind it, so nothing published here can turn one of those controls on, check its status or enforce it. If you want any of them, you arrange them inside the account you hold at the destination, once you are there. The eighteen-and-over restriction is repeated throughout this site, including on the front page and at the end of every operator listing, but no age is verified here: any check of that kind happens at the destination, not on this page. Likewise, no gambling takes place on this site itself. Each of the ten operator listings elsewhere on the site ends with the same line: check availability and the current terms at the destination before claiming anything, because eligibility rules and terms apply there and can change without notice. Once a link is followed, the destination's own rules, checks and account controls apply, not anything published here. No advertising or behavioural profiling network runs on these pages, so nothing here is targeted at a reader who has shown risky behaviour.

What practical steps actually reduce harm?

The controls above live at the destination, but the habits below don't need any account or system to work — they only need to be decided in advance.

  • Decide the amount before you start. A figure fixed in advance, when you are not caught up in play, is a decision made with a clear head. A figure decided mid-session is usually a reaction to what has already happened.
  • Treat that amount as already spent. Thinking of it as the cost of the entertainment, rather than money that might come back, removes the pressure to recover it.
  • Never chase a loss. Increasing a stake to win back what's gone is a decision driven by the previous loss, not by any change in the odds, and it tends to compound the original loss rather than fix it.
  • Keep gambling out of borrowed money or money owed elsewhere. Money that already has another job attached to it turns a loss into a second, separate problem.
  • Take breaks during a session. Stepping away for even a few minutes interrupts the momentum that makes each next bet feel automatic.
  • Involve someone else early. Once gambling stops feeling like entertainment, telling another person while the stakes are still small is easier than explaining it after they've grown.
